What is a 'millennial'?

In terms of the brief for our task the target audience is for '18-35 mainstream millenials', therefore I conducted some research to learn more about this population.

From the Oxford definition of a millennial, they are said to be "a person reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century" however this is just the start to what a millennial is.

The word 'mainstream' may refer to the different groups of psychographics (e.g. aspirers, succeeders, and explorers etc) - however this may not be the case. The category of 'Mainstreamers' are one of the largest groups, who are said to seek security. They tend to be 'domestic, conformist, conventional, sentimental and favour value for money family brands'. However in terms of for millennials I think there's a variety of both aspires and explorers (as well as other categories) because the generation is exposed to a variety of information.

In terms of demographics, the age range of a millennial varies from source to source but the majority would agree that it is those who are born between 1980s and mid 1990s. As the age ranges from 18-35 many millenial are experience major 'life events' such as: graduating from college, starting to working, buying a house etc etc.

There are quite a diverse generation group compared to other generations, consisting of both hard working people as well as showing themselves off. With the wide variety of people they're both accepting and mindful, making them aware of topically issues that may arise. Millenials use self-expression and individualism to present themselves, which is aided through the growth of social media. As technology is growing, millennials are able to take in a lot of information at once, using the most useful and effective ones to come up with ideas and the most beneficial tasks - to get the best deal.
Millennials are said to do a combination of binge-watching and weekly watching of TV shows. However a lot of them prefer online streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime Video etc over tradition TV. Netflix is the prime competitor against TV as it is considered to have the best shows, with variety as well as being convenient. However TV still reaches a large audience, with daily and weekly watchers.

Millennials are considered not to fall for average marketing techniques and instead chooses things for themselves, meaning branded things may also not always 'work' for them. They want to see something fresh rather than repetitive.

Tune in next time for more research on millennials as well as other stuff coming up soon, but this information gives an outline to what a 'millennial' is

Thank you,
Prachi
