Killing Eve Research

Image
(*I may edit and add more information later).  As I start the magazine portion to my cross-media productions I've decided I need an example of how a successful show has decided to market in gaining an audience. The show I'm looking at is 'Killing Eve' which is a spy-thriller drama series produced for BBC America (an American network that is jointly owned by BBC Studios and AMC Networks - not funded by the British licencing fee). It is an eight episode show which airs weekly ever Saturday on BBC1 or you can binge-watch the series on BBC3 iPlayer. The premise of the show follows a MI5 officer - Eve Polastri, played by Sandra Oh, who begins to track down a talented psychopathic, skilled assassin - Villanelle, played by Jodie Cormer. The show is based on the novel Codename Villanelle by Luke Jennings. In terms of marketing, the show is primarily sold with the characters of Eve and Villanelle, as they appear on the majority of posters, and interviews. They are the f...

Aims and Intentions

Aims and Intentions I will use media language to create a brand for my show which will both reflect the crime drama genre as well as creating my own unique identifying features; this will be shown on the print text as well as the audio-visual text. In terms of colour I will use blacks, whites and reds which are common to crime drama as well as horror – as my show is a hybrid of both. My show aims to be appealing to my target audience of millennials, mainly through entertainment and escapism, as well as to crime drama lovers or casual ITV viewers. I intended to target my audience through the familiarisation of crime drama, through themes of death, murder, and pain; as well as iconography of blood, victims and the equilibrium that it takes place in. The show is set in Cambridge which is an ordinary city which anyone could feel familiar with however as a series of murder takes place the city is filled with fear and dilemma. There are long, wide angles which create open space for the c...

Pitch

Title - The Breakfast Killer Logline - When a series of killings occurs in Cambridge, you wonder why they're taking place. Following a girl, you see her perspective and her experience with these murders. Genre - Horror drama (crime drama with elements of horror) Audience - 18-35, cross-gender appeal, Social LIVES, Connected LIVES USP - The main character is the criminal - the one executing the murders, and the audience is positioned with her. You see her committing the crimes, cleaning up after the crimes and what is going through her mind visually. Convergence - There will be recognisable characters (the main characters) across the advertising and magazine, as well as the title being a recognisable logo. There will be a uniform of colour such as black and red which will match the branding as well as being common to the crime drama and horror genres.

First Script Draft

*(Writers notes are written in this small font with an asterisks and brackets. Disclaimer: This is not the final script as it needs to be edited or rewritten at certain points).   1. INTRODUCTION:  BUSY PUBLIC STREET - MIDDAY (tracking shot) The screen fades from black to a medium shot of the back of someone's head with shoulder-length ginger hair.  We don't know who she is but she is dressed in casual but well put together clothes, through the denoted denim jacket.  She pushes/pulls open a pair of double doors to reveal a busy path as students all head home after school. When opening the door the piece is quickly filled with the sound of bustling and chatter as everyone's seen in groups and pairs.  Walking outside she turns left and joins the movement and direction of the crowd, it is a cheerful and loud environment. As she has walked outside the noise of other people talking dims down and instead upbeat music plays.  She walks to the...

Branding: Logos

Image
As I am starting to think about my print text magazine, I decided to look at the titles of other crime dramas, shows etc and how they've conveyed a sense of crime drama through their choice in logos (through use of colour and font etc). I wish that my title is both familiar to the crime drama genre but also different as a lot of the ones i collected look quite similar or bland.

Treatment Sheet

Title: Genre: Crime drama Channel: ITV Target audience: In terms of ITV's LIVES, my programme will target towards the Social LIVES and the Connected LIVES. This is because the shows will focus on young adults, and will be inciting enough for people to want to come back and continue watching. As it is a crime drama this means that there will be cliffhanger, ambiguity and questions that the audience will want answered, therefore will be hooked onto the show. After each episode there will be a buzz on social media as they await the next episode. The genre is also a factor in who we will target, as the show is for people interested in crime drama shows and wishes to watch another which is new and different. There are a number of familiar conventions for the audiences in terms of the crime drama genre, as well as twists that will come throughout the show. The viewers will be from about 16 - 25 years old, reaching both teenagers and young adults. This can also vary to audie...
