Treatment Sheet
Title:
Genre: Crime drama
Channel: ITV
Target audience: In terms of ITV's LIVES, my programme will target towards the Social LIVES and the Connected LIVES. This is because the shows will focus on young adults, and will be inciting enough for people to want to come back and continue watching. As it is a crime drama this means that there will be cliffhanger, ambiguity and questions that the audience will want answered, therefore will be hooked onto the show. After each episode there will be a buzz on social media as they await the next episode.
The genre is also a factor in who we will target, as the show is for people interested in crime drama shows and wishes to watch another which is new and different. There are a number of familiar conventions for the audiences in terms of the crime drama genre, as well as twists that will come throughout the show.
The viewers will be from about 16 - 25 years old, reaching both teenagers and young adults. This can also vary to audiences that are older, who are interested in watching a one off show that they're interested in (the show will roughly be a couple of 45 minute episodes, one series - ending with a loose ends if another season is wished to be made/continued). In terms of NRS Classifications, it will target B, C1, C2 as it address things as mental illness however the shows is still for entertainment rather than informative content.
The show shall allow audiences to escape into this world which is all so familiar to real life (and takes place in real locations) however is focusing on the bad and unnerving aspects.
Form and style: The programme is a crime drama set in Cambridge - which is both busy but can be quiet and abandoned, easy for a crime to take place. The settings (in public) are represented through a series of establishing shots which are both repeated through the series but varies in shot types, the repetition of these scenes allows audiences to get a general feel of how the area is, as if they were there, which will become familiar to them. The settings used include things such as streets, alleyways, shops and houses etc - so places that people go to often.
Following crime drama conventions the show will use low-lighting to create mystery, uncertainty and overall bad vibes. This will be used with scenes where crimes are taken place, as well as suggesting to audiences that the character present is bad, or the location is bad ('bad' meaning they're the murder or a murder is going to take place).
In scenes where everything should be 'normal' to the equilibrium there will be normal colouration and saturation, which is used in contrast to the dark scenes, especially when the same characters are present. The colours make it seem like everything is okay, however murders have been taking place.
In terms of camerawork, shots and aesthetics, it will be filmed similarly to both soap operas as well as other crime dramas (e.g. Broadchurch). This is because there will be long, wide establishing shots of nature (i.e. bushes and trees), as well as close ups on facial expressions and gestures, body language etc.
Themes and typical features: Similarly to most shows, the narrative starts and sets the scene with an equilibrium - this is presented as a public place with lots of people, people chatting, saying hellos and goodbyes. This is then disrupted as a crime (murder) takes place, however this isn't the first death that has taken place, it is just one after multiple others. You are situated with the murderer, however you start to find out why they are killing people.
In the show there is the representation of mental illness (not explicitly, however there are symptoms of schizophrenia and multiple-personality disorder shown - but this isn't an accurate representation therefore you aren't told that the character has it but audiences can infer).
Potential advertisers: The show could bring aware to mental illness, however because the focus is not on that specifically, it could be looking at young people and their lives and interactions - this would attract mainstreams, well-known brands who wish to be associated with the goods of the show.
