Conclusions of TV Listings

After looking at the TV listings for both ITV and Channel 5 it gave me an understanding of what shows air on each channel and what presumably audiences enjoy. This will then aid me in helping me to chose what type of show I will make, who I will be targeting and what channel I want it to air on.

Firstly on ITV there was Loose Women which is a talk show which gains middle aged women viewers and house wives. The purpose of this show would be conversational, for person relationships (use and gratification) and entertainment of a sort. Other shows that are for entertainment include The Chase, Britain's Got Talent and The British Soap Awards.

For my own production I doubt I will make a talk show or something to entertain comedically because then it would be hard to fit in other requires of the brief in terms of narrative and representation etc.

The second category of shows that I found were soap operas such as Emmerdale and Corronation Street who have a large number of viewers who frequently regularly and are casual viewers of the show. This viewer are usually families or specifically parents, as well as middle-aged viewers.

In terms of my own show I think soap operas are a good genre to chose and explore as there is already a viewership on ITV for them which suggests that people enjoy them and may want more. It also means that there is an already establish soap opera genre on ITV, meaning there may be more identifiable codes and conventions.

The last category of shows I found were shows relating to crime such as Killer Women with Piers Morgan and Lethal Weapon. Both of these shows would be targeted towards people who like the crime genre (crime drama and crime documentary). Killer Women focus more on real life events, facts and statistics whereas Lethal Weapon is a cop show.

I think crime drama is a genre I may look into however with the examples present (Killer Women and Lethal Weapon) it would be difficult to create something similar as both shows are quite different. This means that there's not only one category of crime that people enjoy, instead many - so I'd have to chose what I wish to focus on.

Similar to ITV I found three categories of show that aired on Channel 5 which were for children, soap operas and documentaries. The first audience group is children as stripped across the weeks in the morning is Milkshake!. Milkshake airs a variety of children's programmes in the morning which can occupy the kids in the morning, whilst they're eating breakfast or as they getting ready for school, or just on the weekends. The large variety of shows means that it'll probably be entertainment for all young children.

My show will mostly likely not be targeted towards young children because then I wouldn't be able to show a range of skills, as well as not being able to complete the brief. Also, the majority of the programmes that do air are cartoons rather than filmed programmes with real people - which wouldn't show any of my camera skills.

Secondly, Channel 5 has a grand audience of people who like documentaries, or wish to learn more. There were multiple documentaries that aired throughout the week when i looked at the tv listings such as Rich House, Poor House, The Yorkshire Vet, The Reality TV Show and Circus Kids.

I think Channel 5 would be great if I was making a documentary however documentaries include facts, statistics and real life topics, whereas I would be look at more story line and narrative. I think it would be difficult to make a factual programme because then I don't know how you would truthfully make sure your narrative fits the brief without making something up.

The third group of people are people who enjoy soap operas such as Neighbours and Home and Away. Again similar to ITV there must be a following which enjoys soap operas who come back every week to tune into a new episode. Unlike ITV however both Neighbours and Home and Away are set in Australia rather than in the UK so the characters aren't necessarily as relatable.

For my product making a soap opera is a high contender, however I think it would be more beneficial to air it on ITV rather than Channel 5 because there is already a British audience who enjoys these British soap operas.
