TV Listings

As a part of the brief the program that we make must cater towards being aired on either Channel 5 or ITV, therefore to learn more about them I looked into their tv listings and the kinds of programs that already air on each channel.

ITV

- Loose Women: It is a daytime tv entertainment programme which stars both women casts and guest who discuss topical debates with female perspectives. The programme is stripped across the week from Monday to a Friday, airing at 12:30. Examples of guests include people such as: Lorraine Pearson, Josie Gibson, Amy Price and Gabourey Sidible. The chat show mainly targets towards other women, as almost a personal relationship (uses and gratification).

- Emmerdale: An example of fictional British soap opera which is set in Emmerdale a fiction village in the Yorkshire Dales. It follows the residents of the village and addresses a range of different social issues and challenges. The drama airs at 7:00pm, Monday to Friday.

- Coronations Street: Another fictional British soap opera which is set on Coronation Street in a fiction town called Weatherfield. It follows the story of working people and the city streets in which they live. The shows airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at both 7:30pm and 8:30pm.

- The Chase: A quiz show where participants go up against 'The Chaser' with a series of general knowledge questions to win a cash prize, mainly used as entertainment for audiences. The show airs at 5pm on Sunday, targeting families for both entertainment and teaching general knowledge.

- Britain's Got Talent Final: A talent show competition where contestants audition to show off their talent, mainly used for entertainment. The final winner wins £250,000 and a stage at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the British Royal family. The show aired at 7:30pm on Sunday, and provides entertainment for families (all ages).

- The British Soap Awards: An award ceremony which honours the best of British soap operas (e.g: Coronation Street, Doctors, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks). The show aired at 8:00pm on Saturday, targeting families/ parents (especially those who watch these soaps).

- Killer Women with Piers Morgan: A factual programme where Piers Morgan interview female criminal who have done the most 'unspeakable crimes' and tries to find out what drove them to kill. Due to the female focus the show target females, as well as those interested in the topic. The show aired at 10:45pm on Tuesday, therefore not targeting casual tv viewers.

- Lethal Weapon: An American fictional comedy-drama cop show which is based on the Lethal Weapon movies which follows two detectives as they solve crimes. The show aired at 8:00pm on Friday and targets those who are interested in crime dramas as well as those who already like the franchise.

ITV also airs a variety of movies which aired once every now and then, such as:

- Bend It Like Beckham: A British-Indian rom-com which focuses on two 18 year olds who wish to play professional football however their parents are against it, therefore they have to hid the fact that they joined a football team. The movie aired at 10:45pm on Friday, meaning it didn't target casual viewers however still gained a variety of viewers - parents, adults, young adults.

- St Trinian's: A British comedy film which focus on an all girls private school with the worst reputation in Britain. When the school is threatened with closure from the bank the girls take responsibility to save the school. The film aired at 1:10pm on Sunday, targeting a larger audience of families (children and parents), as well as targeting females due to the focus on females.

- Rocky: An American sports film which is about a small-time boxer from working class Philadelphia is chosen to take on the reigning heavyweight champion. It aired at 11:15pm on Saturday, reaching audiences of adults and young adults.

Channel 5

- Milkshake!: A variety of children's programmes which are stripped across the week airing at 6am, examples of programmes include: Peppa Pig, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Mr Men and Thomas and Friends. The shows target children, kids and young people, and is suitable for watching before school.

- Neighbours: An Australian soap opera which follows the domestic and professional lives of the residents of Ramsay Street who work and live in the fictional suburb of Melbourne: Erinsborough. The show is stripped across the week from Monday to Friday at 1:45pm, which mainly targets parents, adults and young adult.

- Home and Away: An Australian soap opera which is set in the town of Summer Bay and follows the residents of a beach-side resort. The show is stripped across the week from Monday to Friday at 1:15pm, again targeting parents, adults and young adults.

- Rich House, Poor House: A factual programme where two families from opposite ends of the financial spectrum and class divide swap homes, social status and budgets for 7 days and discover how the other half lives. The show aired at 9:00pm on Wednesday, where audiences (parents, adults) probably use the show for escapism (uses and gratification) or to look into other people’s lives.

- The Yorkshire Vet: A documentary series which follows the work of the staff of Skeldale Veterinary Centre in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, following life in James Herriot’s former practice. Aired at 8:00pm on Tuesday, and reaches audience who take an interest in animals and helping them.

- The Reality TV Show: A documentary on how reality TV has changed the medium of television and the nature of fame. The shows tracks programmes from the 1970s to the present day and how it has changed. The show aired at 10:00pm on Wednesday, probably reaching a select audience of adults and young adults.

- Circus Kids: Our Secret World: A documentary series which provides an insight into the world of circus kids. The series aired at 10:00pm on Thursday, again reaching an audience of adults and young adults – provides surveillance (uses and gratification) into the topic.

Similar to ITV, Channel 5 provides movies across the week such as:

- Killer in Paradise: A thriller where while on holiday with a husband, a woman suspects one of the island’s locals is a serial killer. The film aired at 3:20pm on Monday.

-Escaping Evil: Saving My Children: A thriller where a woman in a witness protection programme has to protect her new life and family when a man from her past arrives. The film aired at 3:15pm on Tuesday.

- Seduced by a Stranger: A thriller where a single mother’s life is turned upside down when an international conman moves into her neighbour hood. The film aired at 3:15pm on Wednesday.

- Girlfriend Killer: A thriller movie where a businesswomen who creates the perfect marriage proposals for wearily men becomes the target of a crazy client’s obsession. The film aired at 3:15pm on Thursday.

As each film airs at the same audiences know to expect a movie to be on at that time, therefore can either get regular viewership and creates an expectation of the channel. The majority of the films are thriller therefore targets audiences who like thrillers, who also can expect there to be a thriller movie on at that time.
