Shooting Day!

On Wednesday 24th October 2018, I filmed a large portion of my show. The scene consisted of my main character: Tanya and her childhood friend, Sophie; they are seen to be conversing as they overlook the river.

I would say that the shoot went well, as I was able to get the majority of my filming done for my sequence. I was able to get the a lot of the shots that i wanted, and was able to take multiple takes to fix any errors. One problem that did occur was the fact that the lighting quickly changes towards of the end of the filming which I will have to change post-production. Also, my actors were faced away from the light, due to the location, which meant that their faces and facial expressions may not be as bright and clear as i wanted it - again something i may change whilst editing.

The setting took place in an alleyway with an opening that overlooked the river as well as a university. This meant that for continuity I had to make sure that no punts were going past or having people walking in the background. The shots consist of the two characters talking, so I filmed a varied of shots such as two-shots as well as close ups for reaction shots, etc. As i wasn't able to access the other side of the area, it meant that i wasn't able to get any shots from the back of the characters or long shots, but i don't think this is a problem.

When filming i did watch back the clips to make sure we had enough takes, but in terms of how well the dialogue flows I will have to check when editing. When editing I have a lot of takes of the same lines, so i'll have to compare to my storyboard, as well as see which shots look best.

Here is a shot of my lovely camera crew helping me with the boom mic. Due to the location, the space that we had was quite tight which meant that it was sometimes hard to get the mic in the correct spot, however my crew was amazing! At the beginning one problem that we had was that i could hear the audio through the headphones, and didn't know if that was due to the headphones or the boom mic. After checking the settings, we realised the volume was on low which is why we couldn't hear anything. Once we turned the volume up we could hear perfectly fine, and continued on with the filming.

After having filmed this scene I feel relieved and excited because the shooting went well, and now I'm eager to start editing. I hope to not need to re-shoot, especially as the lighting, setting and weather would change but i don't think that is necessary.

  1. Good work Prachi, I'm glad you're happy so far. Remember, in order to meet the brief, you need more than one location.
